In this chapter, Grandpa Joe tells Charlie the story of Mr. Wonka and the Indian Prince Pondicherry.  We find out more of Mr. Wonka’s “cleverness” when creates a palace entirely out of chocolate, including the furniture, rugs, doors and windows for Prince Pondicherry in India.
After the chapter, we made our own clever creations, but with apples and toothpicks (leftovers from the teddy bear picnic and less likely than the chocolate palace was to melt).

Then we headed out to the back yard to try making our own chocolate cement with cornstarch, cocoa powder and water.  It was great fun and afterwards the kids walked around and examined each others trays – it was fascinating to see how everyone had the same ingredients but each one was different.  Some were hard and lumpy, others were swampy – a little like the chocolate pond that Prince Pondicherry found himself swimming in when his palace melted 🙂

And then….the kids got to try some freeze-dried astronaut ice cream, the kind that truly never melts.

Next week we get to hear about what goes on inside the factory, where no one ever goes in, and no one ever comes out…
