Mr. Willy Wonka (Chapter 14)

23 Sep

At long last, after the waiting, the starvation, the summer turning to fall we are finally going to meet Mr Willy Wonka and enter his factory! We had 13 kids this week.

This week Charlie Club began by walking the maze of Union Square and up, up, up Prospect Hill (or Walnut St) to find at Tara’s door a massive maze built by the kids.

Can you draw a maze?

Can you draw a maze?

Once everyone arrived we lined up at the door. (If you want to keep track: Fin was the leader, Eva was the caboose, Delia and Cerys held the door)  Tara explained a few rules before entering and we went upstairs.

"My neighbor is incredibly old, please don't make terrifying noises"

“My neighbor is incredibly old, please don’t make terrifying noises”

After having snacks, then a reminder that they should not be climbing on tables or leaning over the balcony, and a quick clean up, it was time to read the story, and meet the man Willy Wonka.

“Mr. Wonka was clearly as excited as everybody else.”

The reading seemed even more interactive than usual. As Mr Wonka met each family, he is overjoyed, delighted and charmed. He “practically pumped [arms] off their shoulders”.

"'Augustus!' cried Mr. Wonka, seizing his hand and pumping it up and down with terrific force."

“‘Augustus!’ cried Mr. Wonka, seizing his hand and pumping it up and down with terrific force.”

When, the characters in the book begin down the wide corridor, “there was a good deal of pushing and shoving as they hustled and bustled down the passage.” That sounded familiar!

Then Mr Wonka turns right, and then left – and as he turns Tara gets up and walks left and right around the back deck.  Eva noticed something, “it’s like a maze!!”

Indeed! Tara then had mazes they could look at for the rest of the reading.

"The place was like a gigantic rabbit warren, with passages leading this way and that in every direction."

When we finished the chapter (and the mazes) we went back outside to make our own gigantic mazes. Working in two groups, the kids were given straws, scissors and glue to make a huge maze inside a big box.

The two groups had very different styles of working. One group was contemplative and talked about each straw they placed in their construction. One group was very excited to experiment on their own with sizes and amounts of glue, and ways to use the straws outside the maze, but less reflective.

The different work styles resulted in 2 very different looking mazes!

After working hard on our mazes, it was time for a treat and to go home. This week’s treat was licorice (Twizzlers) which could technically be pulled apart and used to create a maze – but I think everyone who took one just ate it.
