We gathered at Tara’s on October 28 – perhaps a few minutes later than usual. Getting up that hill does not seem to get easier! Plus, there was big news amongst our friends named Roisin. Roisin came bounding out of school with ANOTHER lost tooth! Hopefully not her sweet tooth right before Charlie Club and Halloween. And Imogen’s mom Roisin brought a brand new baby to pick up.
But once we were there and ready to go in, Tara put everyone straight to work! We would be making our treat this week and there was work to do.
Besides that, this week we were going to go in the inventing room, where “pots were boiling and bubbling on huge stoves, and kettles were hissing and pans were sizzling…” and Mr Wonka would be “hopping about among the saucepans and the machines like a child among his Christmas presents, not knowing which thing to look at first. He lifted the lid from a huge pot and took a sniff…”
So we gathered around the stove and got to work.
Step One: Grab some marshmallows and throw them in the bowl that was perched above a soon to be bubbling pot.
Step two: Add some vegan butter and turn on the heat. Stir it up to help it melt evenly.
Meanwhile, Tara dove into Chapter 19.
Everyone had an opportunity to stir the mixture.
Once it was melted and consistent, it was time to add the powdered sugar.
Everyone who wanted a turn, also got a chance to stir in some powdered sugar.
It was a super serious time in the kitchen.
Tara finished the chapter while the chief Oompa Loompa (hint – that’s me) stirred it as best she could. Then it was time to create! Even if you had no plans to eat this concoction, you could still make something with this clay like mixture!
Once some ghostly shapes started to form, Tara gave everyone a little black icing to create some details with. Some kids tried to sneak a little test.
But they weren’t quite as subtle as they thought!
When they were finished making their ghouls and ghosts, they had a chance to finish working on the mazes we made in Chapter 14
With all that new glue, we couldn’t really test the mazes this week. It was time again to put on our shoes and go outside to enjoy our ghostly treats.
